The muckrakers provided detailed, accurate journalistic accounts of the political and economic corruption and social hardships caused by the power of big business in a rapidly industrializing United States. Unjustly neglected today, Phillips achieved considerable fame as a muckraker, his most notable piece being "The Treason of the Senate", a series of articles exposing political corruption in the U.S. Senate.
