In this first detail that we learn about Karl there is a subtle hint of his eventual emancipation: the young traveler is going off to America to live a life free of stigma, to start anew.

The journey of emigrant Karl Rossmann takes place in his head; from the arrival into New York harbor to his final train journey to the great Nature Theatre of Oklahoma, it is the odyssey of a man seeking a connection, who does not despair of his own isolation to the last, and at the end perhaps even finds the very home he is constantly searching for at the Oklahoma theatre. Kafka’s first and funniest novel, Amerika tells the story of the young Karl Rossmann who, after an incident involving a housemaid, is banished by his parents to America.
Kafka did an excellent job with his main character, by giving us (the audience) feelings of pity, for the misfortunate and misfit teenager Karl Rossmann, who never finds a peaceful nor happy place to be. Amerika's plot, can still be related to the perceptions some immigrants have (including myself) when first arriving to the U.S.
